You can usually apply online, through a banking app or in a branch, depending on the provider and account type. You may need to provide your name, address, date of birth, National Insurance number and proof of identity, such as a passport or driving licence. Before applying, check the AER, access rules, minimum deposit, withdrawal limits and whether the provider is protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). If accepted, the provider will explain how to pay in your first deposit and manage the account.
