First, compare accounts by interest rate, access rules, minimum deposit and whether the rate is fixed or variable. Check the provider is authorised by the FCA, then apply online, in a branch or through its app, usually providing your address, date of birth and identification. Once approved, transfer money into the account and note any withdrawal limits, bonus-rate conditions and tax treatment; an ISA may offer tax-free interest if you meet the rules. Check whether eligible deposits are protected by the FSCS, normally up to £85,000 per authorised banking group, and read the provider’s terms carefully.
